Ahmad Zahir: 20 Years Later

Ahmad Zahir
His voice raises from amongst the instruments like mist on a cold midnight. At first mild and melancholy, it slowly builds to an explosion. It illuminates the room and he burns in the depth of his own melody.

--Zaheda Ghani

Twenty years after his death his voice is still dear and close to us. Out of the hundreds of songs which Ahmad Zahir sang in his short life, we picked seven.

We feel each one of these songs symbolize a period in his career. They begin in high school to college years to his early studio years till the end. We have also included concerts and studio recordings and private home recordings among friends and family.

The last song Zendagi (Life) was recorded at a private house party. In this song you get a taste of the atmosphere he created from the laughter which can be heard in the background.

What truth his lyrics ring when he says: "life comes to an end, imprisonment is not needed; if imprisonment be the condition, life is not needed..."
