"Fanous is the name of our program," the producer said to me a month before the program aired. He explained, "Fanous is a light in the sky. A semi-weightless oil lamp is tied to the string of a kite and lifted in the air at night, thus creating a brilliant light like a sunflower blooming in Spring"

As our chat progressed, a smile appeared on my face as Safi Sekandari, founder of the newest and hottest radio program around the San Francisco Bay Area told me about his dream now turned into reality.

Fanous is an hour long program aired on 1370 a.m. on Sundays from 8 o'clock until 9. It is one of the few programs that deals with issues facing the youth. Every week a group of devoted young people volunteer several hours of their time to tape inside a small recording studio. The program talks to Afghans whose experiences have included culture shock, school problems, being in gangs, and peer pressure. It also seeks to keep our Afghan culture alive and point out the beautiful aspects of it.

The studio doors are open to those who have ideas and would like to tape, you can also send us feedback of the program at fanous1370@yahoo.com or visit Fanous Radio.

The program is funded by donations of any amount, which can be sent to:
