| by Dr. Latif Tabibi Political immigrations from Afghanistan started in the past century. In the past two decades, the war and forceful displacements of the population in the country speeded up this process. It was for the first time in history, that Afghans immigrated to the western world. The main problem of the Afghan communities in their host countries arises from the lack of experience in administering efficient and useful social organisations for their communities. Such organisations could help them absorb the cultural differences of the new societies faster. In contrast, most of these committees depend on traditional type of organisations, which lead them towards greater difficulties. Consequently, minor cultural conflicts grow bigger and result in family structural disorders and breakdowns. In 1967, there were five Afghan immigrants living in Canada. In 1996 this number reached to 13240 person, from whom 9152 of them live in Ontario. From Afghan immigrants to Canada, 39.33% of them came by themselves. The rest are sponsored by different social institutions. The productivity rate of Afghans in Canada is (1.9%), which is one of the highest among all Canadians of different descendants. However, during 80's the number of women were higher compared to men, but in 90's this balance changed towards the higher number of men. The death rate among 50-60 years old people is higher among Afghan men. Canada's statistics show that most of the Afghan immigrants in this country are of young ages. A review of data presented reveals that productive population in Afghanistan drastically decreased in the past two decades. These changes are also reviewed. Population dispersion of the Afghans in different Canadian states and major cities is reviewed. The paper devoted its main discussion to the social and cultural problems of the Afghan community in Canada. Four periods in dealing with exile problems have been distinguished. It is very interesting that in critical circumstances, Afghan women react more efficiently than men do. Detail statistics on jobs, marriage, divorce, vocational education and field of careers are nor available. |
