Verbal Abuse

By Mizgon Zahir

As minorities we are often faced with a big problem, but this problem is no longer a minority or a majority issue, it is one that is inflected on us by people within our own ethnicity. This problem is verbal abuse. A question arises when the topic of verbal abuse is introduced. Is verbal abuse a real abuse? Many tend to argue. My personal opinion is YES -- verbal abuse is abuse and the type of abuse in which has the most mental affects and are not visible but felt later.

These days more verbal abuse is known to happen in schools which affects the student's school work and home life. I often wondered and questioned why verbal abuse is produced and why it is more among the younger people. I found myself a conclusion: A person’s maturity level and peer pressure plays a big role, and the person’s self esteem level acts as a weapon within this abuse.

As I observed students in school and situations, I found a cycle in this vicious game that is now putting people at risk for suicide and other awful acts. The cycle that became visible to me consists of certain steps that lead to other steps. Peer pressure is the first step, from peer pressure you find an insecurity and paranoia which acts as a second step, from insecurity forms fear of what others may think, from fear comes hurt, from hurt comes a strong dislike, from dislike comes anger and frustration, and in order to relieve this anger you want to inflict it upon others.

The question, "Why?" may be asked; the reason I give this question is because the person does not want to be alone. They feel neglected so in order to feel wanted or needed they try to put people in their situation. From personal experience, I know it hurts the most when someone of my own race finds it amusing to make me or others into a topic of laughter. A majority of Afghan teenagers tend to find it a hobby to put down their fellow Afghans. They have to understand the affects so that they can stop these acts that inflicts pain and hurt.
