Afghanistan Undiscovered   By Farhad Azad
Lemar-Aftaab
January - December 2001

No time in history Afghanistan has had so much coverage. Since September 11th, the name Afghanistan can be heard and read in every language and media form throughout the world. In spite of the tremendous media attention, does the world body really know what is Afghanistan? Its culture, history or people?

However, there is hope. Since September 11th, Lemar-Aftaab | afghanmagazine.com has significantly increased its readership. New readers have sent numerous e-mails of encouragement, gratitude and praise for helping them discover Afghanistan through the humanities. For the past four years, the magazine has kept a straightforward belief, "Through the humanities you will find humanity". This principle has yielded true.

To provide you with more insightful content, we are calling for submissions. We are seeking artistic work, poetry, fiction, articles, essays and travelogues with relation to Afghanistan. If you wish to write, please contact us at the following: submit@afghanmagazine.com.

In the current issue you will find a rich selection of articles concerning Afghanistan; the neglected environmental issues, the plight of the internal refugees, the severe, four-year drought, the extended historic condition of Afghan women, the Afghan-American response to the September 11th event, the survival of Herat's music, the endangerment of Afghan art, the debut of Afghan art in Northern California, a collection of contemporary poetry and fiction, travelogues by Afghan expatriates, and much more.

It has been a pleasure for us in serving our readers for the past four years, and we hope that we serve you more in the years to come. Enjoy the issue, and we look forward in reading your comments and suggestions.

Warmest regards,
Farhad Azad
